Where CallerTracer lookup results come from, how often each layer is refreshed and how reliable each one is.

Every CallerTracer result is assembled from several independent layers. No single database knows everything about a phone number, so we show each field with its source category and the date it was last verified and let you judge it. This page explains what sits behind each field.

The layers

How a lookup runs

  1. The number is normalized to international format and matched to its country.
  2. Country, region and time zone are resolved from numbering-plan records. For North American numbers this includes the area code and prefix.
  3. Carrier and line type are fetched from live carrier records. If the number was looked up recently, the cached value is used and its verification date is shown.
  4. Risk signals are combined from provider scoring and community reports into a single level: low, medium or high.
  5. Caller name is added when a carrier publishes one.
  6. If an Owner Report is unlocked, licensed identity data is queried for that number only.

What "verified" means

Each field carries one of three states:

  • Verified: returned by an authoritative source, such as the serving carrier or a numbering authority, on the date shown.
  • Likely: inferred from a reliable but indirect source, for example a country-level location for a number outside North America, or a caller name that has not been re-checked recently.
  • Unknown: no source returned data. We show this rather than guess.

Caching and freshness

We cache number data so that repeated searches do not trigger repeated provider requests. Cached fields expire on a schedule that depends on how quickly the underlying data changes: carrier and line type after 90 days, caller name after 30 days, risk after 7 days. Any field can be refreshed sooner when a new report arrives or a user re-runs the lookup after the cache expires.

Limits you should know

  • Spoofing. Scammers can fake the number that appears on your phone. A lookup describes the real number, which may not be the one actually calling you. A "local" number that resolves to a VoIP provider elsewhere is the classic sign.
  • Coverage outside North America. Carrier and line type are available worldwide. Caller name and community reports are strongest for US and Canadian numbers.
  • Not a background check. CallerTracer is not a consumer reporting agency. Results may not be used for credit, employment, insurance or housing decisions. See the FCRA Disclaimer.

Removing your information

Owner Report data about a number can be excluded on request. See Remove My Info. Carrier, line type and area code data describe the number itself and remain available.
